It is that time of year again! Like in years past – this post will serve as a one-stop shop for all of the arrivals and departures for the San Diego Gulls, a roster changes compendium for the 2022-2023 offseason.

Below is a time line of the departures and arrivals as well as a line-up at the bottom that will be continually updated as news comes to hand.

The New Guys

This will be updated with a short bio and my thoughts on each new signing.

Andrew Agozzino re-acquired

Almost forgot the Ducks brought Agozzino back – dealing the already departed Sustr to acquire him. He helps to shore up the center depth.

Trevor Carrick 2 – Maple Syrup Bro Electric Boogaloo

We know what this guy is about. Welcome back Trevor.

Nick Wolff

Wolff is a 6’5″ 220lb left shooting shutdown defenseman – I am guessing he was signed to be paired with one of the Ducks incoming offensively gifted defenders. Which also means he – or they – would need to play their off-side as they are both left shot defenders too. I am going to go ahead and assume that Zelwegger makes the big club though – just based on how he looked at development camp.

Eddie Matsushima

Matsushima has been a constant fixture in Tulsa for the past two seasons and is your prime example of a hard working player that has slowly moved their way up the ranks. Starting in DIV3 of the NCAA at his native University of Wisconsin-River Falls, moving onto the SPHL and then breaking through to the ECHL permanently with the Oilers in 2021-2022 after brief stints with the Solar Bears, Mariners and Railers in 2019-2020. He set a career high in goals (28) and points (47) last season while leading the team in scoring. With the Ducks unlikely to have any forward prospects on the Oilers other than potentially McLaughlin again – it makes sense to have the 29 year old left shot center under contract for an easy call-up.

Anthony Costantini

Constantini is a 6’1″defender that is crucially a right-shot. He played the last four seasons with the Ottawa 67’s where Pavol Mintyukov joined him after a mid-season trade. Like Carroll below – he is a shutdown defender, putting up only 36 points in 67 games and 26 points in 67 games the year before. Like Profaca – the Ducks are hoping they can develop him into something long-term as they have managed with the likes of Simon Benoit before.

Andy Carroll

Carroll saw one game of action with Abbotsford last season after spending the previous five years at Minnesota State University where he put up average to middling numbers. At 6’0″ and 185lbs he isnt your atypical hulking shutdown type but clearly works hard to earn his opportunities. Expect him to spend most of the year in Tulsa.

Kyle Crnkovic

Crnkovic is possibly the most exciting signing to me – Ive seen it mentioned that he was among the most intriguing unsigned CHL graduates. He had 64 points in 63 games as a 17 year old but was passed over in the 2019 draft then followed that up with 32 points in 24 games in the pandemic shortened season. Last year he led the Blades with 94 points in 68 games as a 20 year old and as the Ducks selected his team-mate Yegor Sidorov in the third round of this most recent 2023 draft – they obviously had an eye on the 5’7″ left shooting winger also. He was traded just before training camp to the Seattle Thunderbirds and was particularly noticable in their memorial cup run – scoring goals like the below.

And this one

Easy to see that he has a very underrated shot. I initially had him tagged as going straight to Tulsa right out of camp but I can see him sticking with the Gulls if everything falls right.

Player List

Again like last off-season, its colour coded by who is under contract, who is not and who is departed.
