It is that time of year again! Like in years past – this post will serve as a one-stop shop for all of the arrivals and departures for the San Diego Gulls, a roster changes compendium for the 2021-2022 offseason.

Below is a time line of the departures and arrivals as well as a line-up at the bottom that will be continually updated as news comes to hand.

The New Guys

This will be updated with a short bio and my thoughts on each new signing.

Pavol Regenda

Regenda was a part of the Slovakian National team that won bronze at the Beijing Winter Olympics scoring 1-3=4 points and spent most of his year with HK Dukla Michalovce of the Slovakian Extraliga. He finished the year with 39 points in 43 games playing against men.

Glen Gawdin

Gawdin finished 28th in the league in assists and third on the Heat in scoring – compiling 50 points in 62 games via a combination of 15 goals and 35 assists. He was not at the top of my wish list for offseason signings but does go a way to providing a much needed quality playmaker.

Chase De Leo

Needs no introduction. A massive get to bring the La Mirada native back home after he left for Utica last year and lead them in scoring with 56 points in 55 games. He immediately slots back into the top six and provides veteran leadership up front.

Justin Kirkland

Following Gawdin over from Stockton, Kirkland is a veteran forward adept at killing penalties and finished fourth on the Heat in scoring with 48 points in 66 games. He also lead the team in playoff scoring with 12 points in 13 games as Stockton made the Western Conference Finals. He can play center or left wing and slots in to provide some much needed depth through the mid to bottom six.

Austin Strand

Should be a familiar name given his time with Ontario, the right shot defender had 45 points through a total of 135 games spanning the last four seasons. He also saw stints with the Kings – playing in 21 games and compiling three points. He helps to shore up the veteran depth on the right side.

Colton White

White spent the majority of last season with the Devils so I am assuming he ends up with the Ducks either on a bottom six pairing or as a spare for injury cover. He had three points in six games with Utica last season and four points in 27 games for New Jersey.

Olli Juolevi

It is sad that the first thing I thought of when I saw his name pop up as the newest Duck signing was this. But as that article states – it was some misreporting and perhaps anti-gaming hysteria going on at the time that lead to a witch hunt as to who the mysterious high-drafted player that was potentially ruining his career with one too many hours dropping in with the boys (or whatever the Fortnite equivalent was at that time). Selected by Vancouver fifth overall in the 2016 NHL entry draft, the same draft that the Ducks took his London Knights teammate Max Jones 24th overall and then Sam Steel with the 30th pick acquired from Toronto in the Freddy Andersen trade. It stands to reason that despite not putting up the numbers in the NHL that would match his draft position he has a lot of potential. Cracking the NHL in a full time capacity during the shortened 2020-2021 pandemic season and then spending most of last year on the shelf with injuries could he re-realize his potential with the Ducks? His injury history reads much like Axel Andersson to me – starting out hot with the Comets in his first stint with them and then injured for the rest of year.

Josh Healey

Healey reads to me like a defensive defensemen – although his numbers in College do hint that he has some offense to his game yet to show in his pro career. Healey had a 21 points in 33 game campaign in his Junior year at Ohio state and then followed that with a 25 points in 35 games final showing in his senior year. First turning pro with Stockon he has put up a total of 32 points in 227 games across the Heat, Admirals and Wolves. I know it is a flawed stat but he lead the Admirals in +/- last season with +20 also good for 20th in the entire league. If anything he hopefully fills the massive hole left by the departure of Trevor Carrick.

Player List

Again like last off-season, its colour coded by who is under contract, who is not and who is departed.
