It was announced by the AHL today that the Pacific Division will take part in a post-season tournament to determine an overall winner for the division.
Other divisions in the AHL were announced to have no such tournament and that their division champions will be identified by points percentage leader at regular seasons end.
No further details were revealed as to who would host this tournament or how many games it would feature, only that the winner would be awarded the John D. Chick Trophy as divisional winner.
The PHPA is not happy with the call, stating additional risk for players already under undue stress due to the global pandemic.
The Gulls are likely to have the services of Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale once the regular season in Anaheim has ended. Drysdale was assigned to the Taxi Squad in a paper transaction on deadline day as well as Captain Sam Carrick.
I will update this page with more information as it comes to hand, including schedule and opponents.
Update: According to The Mayor. The first round of the tournament will be hosted in Irvine and the top three teams in the division by seasons end will get a Bye into the second round of play. The bottom four teams will take part in a play-in tournament to determine the fourth seed in the second round of play. The second round will be a best of three series with top seed facing bottom seed, second seed facing third. These games will be played at the top-seeded teams home arena. Winners of these two series will make the Pacific Division Final – another best of three series to be played in the home area of the remaining highest seeded team.
